A path from the tablao to fusion music
Josemi Carmona is one of the essential creators of the new flamenco sound in the ’90s, both from La Barbería del Sur and with Ketama. Josemi takes us on a tour in which he tells us about his trajectory from the tablao to fusion music and his subsequent work with great musicians from other genres (Bugge Wesseltoft, Alex Cuba, Dave Holland, Paco de Lucía, Alejandro Sanz, Javier Colina, Carles Benavent, Jorge Pardo, etc.), and his facet as a producer, from Barbería and Ketama, passing through Las Migas, in countless projects with other artists. Carmona, a precocious guitarist since he was 4 years old, made his debut at the World Guitar Festival on the Island of Martinique at the age of 9, and participated at 14 in the historic American tour ‘Flamenco Puro’, with the participation of mythical artists such as Farruco , his father Pepe Habichuela, Fernanda de Utrera, Güito y Chocolate, among others, where he met the master Sabicas, an encounter that marked him like few others. Josemi recounts his personal experience and the changes in flamenco guitar since then: the beginnings, evolution in the ways of playing, anecdotes, influential musicians, incorporation of new elements and languages to today’s guitar, up to the world of current production and composition with new technologies from the studio.
